Mamaroneck is a town located in Westchester County along the Long Island Sound. The town includes the entire Village of Larchmont (one square mile in size), and the Village of Mamaroneck that is West of the Mamaroneck River (2.3 square miles) (the other part of Village of Mamaroneck belongs to the Town of Rye). Due to its beautiful waterfront location, Mamaroneck was developed as a vacation community during the 1800s.
Nowadays, the town has a diverse setting with a population of over 29,000. You will find out the Mamaroneck downtown offer plenty of shopping and dining options along Mamaroneck Ave. The vibe is a little different from the downtowns in Rye or Larchmont. While the downtown may not be as quaint, it is bigger and a larger variety of restaurants. Instead of high end boutiques, the Mamaroneck has more shops that average residents may frequent.
Walking through the downtown, you will pass the library and the Emelin Theater and reach the 45-acre Harbor Island Park. Along the water, the park offers playgrounds, picnic areas, sports fields, and a beach. It is a popular spot for residents to fish at the dock. You will find exclusive boat clubs and yacht clubs all along the harbor.
There are many expensive homes in Mamaroneck, especially along the water. However, it offers a larger variety of homes. You will find many multi-unit buildings, apartment complexes, condos and coops in Mamaroneck. In the village there is a strong immigrant community. Mamaroneck also has a European feel to it. The French international school is located in Mamaroneck and Larchmont, which are attractive to those expats.
Mamaroneck is located approximately 24 miles North of midtown Manhattan. There is a Metro North train station downtown, which can arrive to Grand Central Station in under 40 minutes while taking the express train.
For driving, one would take Interstate 95 South to New York City, and North/East to Connecticut and New England.
The Mamaroneck School District serves the students in Larchmont and half of those in Mamaroneck Village. Other students in the town attend the Rye Neck Union Free School District. A small portion may go to Scarsdale School District.
