Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow are historic river villages. Sleepy Hollow was called North Tarrytown until 1996. Tarrytown is a village located within the Town of Greenburgh, while Sleepy Hollow belongs to the Town of Mount Pleasant. However, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow share a chamber of commerce, school district, and have the same zip code.
Downtown Tarrytown is a very walkable village, and is generally considered a little more vibrant than some other river towns. A stroll down Broadway and Main Street, you will find the Tarrytown Music Hall, which offers a year-round program of Broadway style musicals, family friendly shows, and world renowned artists.
Tarrytown Third Friday is a popular community event that takes place every third Friday of the month. Not only do stores open late, the downtown area becomes lively with live music, fun activities for kids like face painting and bouncy houses, and sometimes shows like circus acts and magicians.
The area has a long history. It was once home to the Native American Wekguasgeek tribe, later settled by Dutch settlers, and was part of the Underground Railroad. Due to the gorgeous views the Hudson River provides, several historic mansions were built.
There is the Lyndhurst mansion, a gothic revival estate that was the home of the famous railroad developer Jay Gould. Other mansions include the Philipsburgh Manor, and the Rockefeller Estate Kykuit on beautiful grounds and views, and connects to the Rockefeller State Park Preserve. Another famous mansion is the Sunnyside, home to Washington Irving, the author of the famous novel "The Legends of the Sleepy Hollow".
There are several parks along the river side providing a great view, sports views, picnicking areas, and sometimes festivals and concerts in the parks. For boating, there is the Tarrytown Boat Club, Washington Irving Boat Club, and a public boat launch. The recreational department and the YMCA offer programs for every age group, and maintains a senior center at Pierson Park.
The Tappen Zee Bridge is a major thruway in the Lower Hudson Valley, and it crosses the Hudson River at Tarrytown. It connects the Village and the rest of Westchester to I-287 across the Hudson River to Rockland County and New Jersey.
The village is also convenient to the I-87, Sprain Brook and Saw Mill Parkways. You can drive to New York City in about 45 minutes, depending on traffic.
Locally, Route 9 also passes through Tarrytown, traveling along the Hudson River up to Putnam County. However, because Tarrytown is so central for commuting, there are frequent complaints about traffic and parking. The Tappen Zee Bridge is currently undergoing a multi-billion dollar restoration, and we will have to see how it changes the traffic situation in the future.
The Tarrytown train station is a hub for the Hudson Line at Metro North. There are express trains from Tarrytown that will arrive in Grand Central Station in New York City for 35 minutes.
