People live in the town of Putnam Valley for the beautiful landscape, spacious lots, and country living while still being within commuting distance to New York City. Driving through Putnam Valley, you will be on country roads surrounded by trees and lakes. There are actually so many lakes, it is also known as 'The Town of Lakes'.
The town is located just North of Westchester County. If you are looking to buy a house, by crossing into Putnam County, you will find houses with much more land and space for the same price. Life is a little secluded there, with barely any stores or businesses in the town.
The Southern part of the town, at the area South of Lake Peekskill, is not really rural, and with a short 10 minute drive you will be in Westchester. The Jefferson Valley mall and the Cortlandt Town Center provides more shopping and dining options, and a movie theater.
The outdoor recreational opportunities are plenty in Putnam Valley. Fahnestock State Park and California Hill State Park are partly in town, with lots of hiking trails, fishing and boating, and offers cross country skiing in the winter. The town park has different sport fields, a roller-hockey rink, tennis and volleyball courts.
Among the many lakes, Lake Oscawana is the largest one at 386 acres. It is the only lake that allows motorboats. Residents or summer vacationers living by the lake may have lake rights and unlimited access to the beach.
Putnam Valley is around 50 miles North of mid town Manhattan. A drive there takes around 85 minutes, depending on what part of the town you live in. Within the town, there are only local roads that connect to the Taconic State Parkway outside of town. There is no Metro North station. The most convenient one may be driving to the Peekskill train station, around 15 minutes away.
