Katonah is located within the town of Bedford in Westchester, New York. It is not at village status, but considered a census-designated place (CDP).
It is hard not to enjoy the quaint downtown of Katonah. You will find Victorian style homes on tree-lined streets, many within walking distance to the shops and metro North station downtown. You will find a collection of local shops and restaurants along the streets, since chain stores are not allowed.
Among the stores, you will find the old fashioned Charles Department store, Kelloggs and Lawrence hardware store, etc. A local dining spot would be the Blue Dolphin, a popular unpretentious restaurant that serves comfort Italian food. For more shopping options and big box stores like Target, you can go to Mount Kisco 10 minutes away.
Katonah has an artsy feel to it, not surprising given its selection of culture activities. The Katonah Museum and the Caramoor Center put on quality concerts, performances, and art exhibitions. The local Katonah library is an active hub, and offers concerts and movie nights. You will also find the historic John Jay Homestead, which hosts several events during the year, and a summer farmers market.
To enjoy the outdoors, the Katonah Memorial Park within walking distance from downtown, is a popular spot with swimming facility and sports fields. The area is also very scenic, with the Muscoot Reservoir and the Lasdon Park and Arboretum nearby.
People who chooses to live in Katonah usually enjoy the friendly, close knit village atmosphere. Compared to the rest of Bedford, where there are 2+ and 4+ acres zones, the walkable homes in the village are on smaller lots. Lucky for those who enjoy the village atmosphere, because those homes are usually comparatively cheaper. Outside the walkable area, you will find larger estates - for example, the 153-acre estate of Martha Stewart.
Katonah has an interesting history. The original location of Katonah was flooded in the late 1800s to create a reservoir, which still supplies water to New York City. Fifty original buildings were moved on rolling logs, pulled by horses, to the current location of Katonah.
