Looking to move in the suburbs, but have to commute to New York City? The Westchester and Hudson Valley area provide some of the most convenient commuter towns and fastest commute among the New York City suburbs. Find out more New York City commute options below:
If you do not want to deal with crossing the Hudson River, you will want to live on the East side of the river, in the towns North of New York City. That includes Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess Counties. The easiest way to commute is usually by the Metro North commuter trains. Click here to find out more about the Metro North routes and time tables.
On the West side of the Hudson River, you will find New York City commuter towns in Rockland, Orange, and Ulster Counties. Rockland County is the closest and is located along the border of New Jersey. For the same price, you may find better real estate choices here compared to the East side of the Hudson River, like Westchester. Check out the trains and bus routes that are offered, and the approximate commute time required.
Many people choose to live in the Hudson Valley but have to commute to New York City either daily or occasionally. If that is a deciding factor for you, check out our commute distance tables below to find out how far each town is.
For each town/village/hamlet, we look up the address of the town hall or government office. Then we plug it into google maps and check the distance from that address to 1) Penn Station for towns on the West side of the Hudson River 2) Grand Central Station for towns on the East side of the Hudson River.
The distance is based on the route google recommends. The drive time is based on that route, assuming no current traffic. I know google recommends different routes at different times, and the time varies. So please do not take this as the most scientific calculations.
