Living in Poughkeepsie NY

City of Poughkeepsie population (2010 census): 32,736 over 5.7 sq miles

The City of Poughkeepsie is located inside the Town of Poughkeepsie. When talking about the differences and boundaries of the two Poughkeepsie, it confuses even long time residents. (You will often hear,"I live in Poughkeepsie, the town, not the city.") In fact, the City of Poughkeepsie is only 5.7 sq miles in size, but half of the town's residents live in the city. It has its own zip code, court, police, property tax rate, and school district.

Poughkeepsie was once a busy port on the Hudson River, shipping beer from local breweries and factory goods down the river to Manhattan. A decline in factory work and river shipping lead Poughkeepsie towards economic decline. There have been recent attempts at revitalization. There is somewhat of an art scene in the city, and several nice restaurants are open in the historic area of the City of Poughkeepsie.

The city of Poughkeepsie offers urban living with walkable streets and easy access to transportation. The town offers a suburban life style of driving, detached single family homes with large yards, more parks and green areas.

The Bardavon Opera House, located on Market Street, has been open since 1869 and is the oldest continuously operating theater in New York State. Every year its performance calendar is filled with performance by the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, dance, drama, and music events. The Mid-Hudson Civic Center also hosts some concerts and shows, and serves as a community ice rink at other times.

A major improvement of the waterfront area is the Walkway over the Hudson. The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge was built as a railroad bridge in 1889, connecting Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County to Highland, across the river in Ulster County.

The bridge went out of service in 1974. After a 18 month restoration, it was reopened as the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park on October 3, 2009 as a pedestrian walkway, making it the longest footbridge in the world. 750,000 visitors visit the walkway annually.

The Amtrak trains runs South to Penn Station, and North to the Albany-Rensselaer station, which then connects to routes to other parts of the county.

Within the City of Poughkeepsie, the City of Poughkeepsie Transit provides bus services within the city, to the town and the major shopping at the Poughkeepsie Galleria and South Hills Mall, and to Hyde Park. The Dutchess County Loop bus runs throughout the entire county, and almost every route stops in the City of Poughkeepsie.
