It is June, and that last school bell will ring at the end month. How do keep your kids entertained during the long summer while keep them learning at the same time? We’ve found you 5 fun yet educational places for kids in Westchester County, where kids can learn and laugh at the same time. Some programs are free and others have a low fee. Some even offer scholarships!
Science Barge, Yonkers, NY
This is run by Groundwork Hudson Valley and many kids have been taken here on school field trips. The science barge is docked in Yonkers, NY. They teach nature, ecology and science there. For children 10 years and under, there is a suggested $5 donation for visiting the barge on the weekends.
The barge is open Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm to 6pm. It is docked in downtown Yonkers, north of the Yonkers Pier.
The Planetarium at New Rochelle High School, New Rochelle, NY
The New Rochelle High School run free planetarium shows about once a month year-round that are open to the public. View the stars and planets and learn about them.
Larchmont Library, Larchmont
If you are looking to keep kids entertained during the summer but also want to keep them learning, take a look at your local library programs for children. Here is a sampling of the June library programs at Larchmont for kids:
- Lego Club (for school age kids) Friday, June 5th 3:30 – 4:30pm Create projects out of Legos and talk with other kids about what you are making with Legos. Projects will be displayed at the library until the next program meeting.
- Superhero Stories and Crafts (school age kids) Thursday, June 11th 4:00 – 5:00pm Listen to stories about Superhero kids, practice your own Superhero powers and create a mask to take home.
- Library Lab: Chemistry (school age kids) Friday, June 12th 3:30 - 4:30pm A STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) program for kids. Put on safety goggles and do fun experiments!
Clay Art Center, Port Chester
If your child is creative, take a look at the Clay Art Center. This art center is known for pottery and ceramic arts, instructing both children and adults on how to become skilled artists & have fun doing so!
They have a Summer Camp & Kids’ Workshops. Summer Camp is run 2 weeks at a time, so kids can learn pottery skills in addition to other camp fun, or attend camp there for the entire summer and learn all of the techniques. Hudson River Museum, Yonkers
At this well-known museum you’ll find lots of events for families and kids. During the summer they have some fun arts & crafts projects kids can make, and also some science projects that kids can do.
