You know winter is way too cold and long when you celebrate any above freezing days. Although we just got another around of snow, the weather forecast looks promising, predicting several above 40 degree days this week! So now that it is getting "warmer", it is a great time to take advantage of all the snow on the ground.

The Fahnestock Winter Park at Carmel, Putnam County is a great place to enjoy winter sports and scenery. Many people are familiar with the 16,000 acre Fahnestock State Park, since it is a popular spot for summer camping and hiking. The Winter Park is also very popular with locals and visitors.

The Winter Park offers the following:

  • 18 km of machine groomed, tracked and mapped trails for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
  • Ski equipment and boots rental
  • Sledding hill
  • And beautiful winter views of the woods, mountains, frozen lakes, cliffs, etc.

When you go to the Winter Park, you will find a lodge where you can get your pass and rentals. There are trails with different difficulties. The ones by the lodge are suitable for beginners.

Cross country skiing is quite the exercise. After getting enough exercise, here is the cozy Acore Cafe where food and beverages are offered. You can even warm up indoors, or at the outdoor wood fireplace.

The costs of skiing at the park is very reasonable. The trail pass is only $10 for adults. For families looking for something more relaxing, maybe try out the sledding hill.

For those of you who do not know where the park is, the entrance is conveniently located minutes from the Taconic State Parkway exit. The park is located in Putnam County, close to Cold Spring, about an hour drive from New York City, Poughkeepsie, and Middletown NY.

If you plan to visit this Sunday, March 7, there is also a special sugar maple celebration at the park. You can get a pancake breakfast and hands-on demonstration of tapping trees, boiling sap and producing syrup. Check out the event website for more details.
