A quick search for a "Croton-on-Hudson homes for sale under $500,000", with at least 3 bedrooms, yields several homes, starting from $400,000.
The first listing that caught our attention was listed at $425,000. This one is described to be "private and wooded" on half an acre. What caught my attention are the several skylights and higher ceiling in the living room and sunroom. I also like the walk-out, finished basement.
Perhaps the kitchen needs some work, but overall the home has a spacious layout.

The rancher has a decent sized yard, an attic and basement space. The kitchen is newly renovated, although the bathrooms still have the popular colors from the 1960s.

HOW MUCH: $499,500 (as of February 2, 2015), $199.8/square feet
YARD: 0.3116 Acres
TAXES: $17,523 a year
SCHOOL DISTRICT: Croton Harmon
Both home may need some work, but are expected at this price range. There is a $5,000 difference in taxes between the two homes though, and they belong to different school districts.
