Here at our blog we thrive on all things local. We will be featuring local Hudson Valley and Westchester small business. Our first guest is Melissa, an entrepreneur from Yonkers with her own line of natural soy candles and massage oil company, Bronx Naturals.
Hi, Melissa! Why and when did you start your business?
Since before I can remember, I have always been a creative self starter. Working in corporate America for over 8 years in the fashion industries was a great experience but in my opinion rather stifling for me as a creative person. I find that one of the goals I had for starting a business is that I have a lot of creative freedom.
I started this company in 2012 as a way to fulfill my creative passion. And from there it grew into one of the most amazing experiences in my life. I get to create, adjust and update according to where I see my company moving towards. That to me is priceless, not to mention making my own schedule.
Tell us a little about Bronx Naturals:
I was born and raised in The Bronx, hence the name The Bronx Naturals. I have the rare and unique opportunity to make candles for people to use in their homes with their loved ones, and also custom make candles for events such as weddings, bridal showers and gift favors for corporate events and gatherings.
We have recently just launched the great Bronx Naturals Spa Box, which is a monthly subscription to 3-4 all natural hand crafted home, bath and body products delivery right to your doorstep.
Where is your business based in?
My business has been here in Yonkers, NY for the full 3 years of operation. I have a part time assistant and interns who work for me when I attend events and markets.
Tell us a little about yourself? What do you like to do when you are not working?
I work and live in Yonkers. I grew up in the Bronx, and have been going shopping at Stew Leonard's since I was 4 years old. My grandmother and Aunt would take me and my siblings to the Connecticut and now Yonkers location. I always looked forward to it. It was great getting out of the city and smelling the country air. I always enjoyed pressing the cow button on the walk and hearing the Cow meowwwww!
Now as an adult I love to go shopping on the weekends for beautiful flowers in Scarsdale, and check out the local farmers markets for fresh produce.
One of my favorite restaurants to go to with my husband in Scarsdale is Fig and Olive. They offer a unique twist on Mediterranean cuisine in a very stylish environment, only 15 minutes drive from my house. Just be sure to make reservations!
