Dutchess County is located in the scenic Hudson Valley region, about 1.5 hours North of New York City. Covering 800 square miles, the population of Dutchess County is 297,488 based on the 2010 census. It offers a lot to nature lovers: hike or bike the Walkway Over the Hudson or the rail trails, visit the (six!) historical estates and their beautiful gardens, drive through the farmlands, or play a round of golf at any of the 16 golf courses.

Along the river and on the Eastern part of the county, you will mostly find spacious suburban living in the towns of Poughkeepsie, Fishkill, Wappinger, and Lagrange. The Western and Northern part of the county, like Pawling, Amenia, and Milan, is mostly rural. 

Many people from the Southern towns commute to work in New York City. The City of Beacon has undergone an artistic rebirth and has attracted new residents with its walkable downtown and art scene. The quaint villages in Rhinebeck, Red Hook, Millbrook, and Millerton are popular weekend spots for people from the city. Many properties are used as summer vacation homes in the walkable villages, or a country home among the rolling hills and farms in the nearby towns.

Dutchess County is home to major colleges like Vassar College, Marist College, the Culinary Institute of America, and Bard College. The colleges are among the largest employers in the county, along with IBM, which has over 7000 employees in the county between its two campuses, in Poughkeepsie and East Fishkill.
