The village of Millbrook NY sits in the center of the town of Washington in Dutchess County. It is a small country village in the rural town. Millbrook is very small, with less than two square miles of land and a population of 1,500.
Due to its quaint and picturesque setting, Millbrook is a popular weekend getaway for New Yorkers. The main street of Millbrook, Franklin Avenue, is adorable, with well maintained and decorated historical buildings. Within the village, there are some great restaurants including Cafe Les Baux, Babette's Kitchen, and the Millbrook Cafe.
Other stores include clothing and jewelry boutiques, home decor stores, the Millbrook Department Store, and two locally and independently owned book stores. Some of the best antique shopping in Dutchess County can also be found in Millbrook.
Outside of the main street, a place of interest would be Innisfree Garden. It is a Chinese-style “tea garden” with 185 acres surrounding a large glacial lake. Millbrook is known for being a farm couuntry, so there are many farms, stables and equestrian activities all around. Millbrook Hunt, an equestrian organization, sponsors trail rides, hunter paces, hunter trials and hound and puppy shows. There is also the Millbrook Golf & Tennis Club and a polo club nearby.
Millbrook Commute
Millbrook NY is about 80 miles North of New York City. Travel time is close to two hours via the Taconic State Parkway. The closest city to Millbrook is Poughkeepsie, which is a 25 minute drive away.
Two Metro-North railway lines serve the Millbrook area out of New York's Grand Central Station. If you take the Hudson Line, which offers views of the river most of the journey up, you will get off at Poughkeepsie. The Harlem Line, which skirts along the Connecticut border, will bring you to either Dover Plains or Wassaic (the last stop on this line). Dover Plains is 8 miles from Millbrook, and Wassaic is about 10 miles away.
Millbrook Schools
All the students in Millbrook go to the Millbrook School District. Some of the students in the Town of Washington go to school in the Dover Union Free School District. Click here for more information about all Dutchess County school districts.
There is also the Millbrook School, a private, coeducational preparatory school that provides day school and boarding for Grades 9-12.
Millbrook Real Estate
Due to its beautiful country setting and the quaint village, many homes in Millbrook are bought as second homes. Some people prefer to buy a country cottage walkable to the stores in the village, while many other choose a country estate.The village is one of the most affluent towns in New York, and some of the homes are very spectacular and expensive.
Most of the homes in the town are older. 37.3% were built before 1940. 65.5% of the homes are owner occupied, and 34.5% are rentals.
