The town of Red Hook in Dutchess County, New York (not to be confused with Red Hook, Brooklyn) is in the Northwest corner of the county. Driving North from Red Hook and you will enter Columbia County.
The town of Red Hook includes the Village of Red Hook, the Village of Tivoli, and 8 hamlets. It is a charming country town, and offers lush country landscape and an assortment of beautifully restored old Victorians. Like the chic Rhinebeck five miles away, Red Hook is a popular weekend spot for New Yorkers.
In the fall, the foliage is spectacular. Purportedly Red Hook is named after color of those red leaves. One major attraction in Red Hook includes the Aerodrome, a museum of antique airplanes. The aerodrome holds weekend air shows from spring to fall, where you can experience the era of early aviation.

The historic Montgomery Place is best known for its scenic views and formal gardens. The Poet's Walk is a popular park and hiking trail that provides beautiful views of the Hudson River. The trail is only two miles and an easy stroll, but along the way you will find woods and meadows, footbridges, special pavilions and Hudson River views that makes it very rewarding.
There are a few shops and restaurants located mostly in the village of Red Hook, but there is not much nightlife. Most of the fun activities are during the day, for example checking out all the antique shops in Red Hook, or visit the many farms and farm stands for fresh produce. The farms in Red Hook include you-pick farms, organic meat farms, horse farms, Christmas tree farms, and more.
To maintain its authenticity, there are no big strip malls or shopping centers except for maybe the Stop and Shop supermarket in the town of Red Hook. The closest big box store and chain restaurant will be in the nearby Kingston or Poughkeepsie.

Red Hook is approximately 100 miles North of New York City. Red Hook is not served by the Metro North rail system, but Amtrak provides service to the Rhinecliff Amtrak station 8 miles South of town. The empire service of Amtrak provides daily trains going from NYC up to Albany.
Students attend the Red Hook Central School District. It is known to have an excellent sports and drama program.
There are two schools of higher education in the town of Red Hook. The hamlet of Barrytown is the site of the Unification Theological Seminary. Annandale-on-Hudson, another hamlet, is home to Bard College.
