Newburgh is a city in Orange County, New York. The city has a glorious history. It was the home to the first Edison power plant and was the first American city to be electrified. The Broadway in downtown is purposely made grand, and one of the widest streets in the State of New York. You can tell from the once beautiful homes (some are still well kept, but some are not), many with great Hudson river views, how prestigious it was to live in the city.
However, the City of Newburgh has gotten a bad rap over the years. Many downtown buildings are boarded up and abandoned. Efforts are being made to improve the city.
Newburgh has a lot going for it. Its location is great, being just a drive across the bridge from Beacon and Dutchess County. The amazing architecture of the homes attracted new home buyers, who have restored a lot of homes over the past ten years.
The waterfront district has turned into a popular destination for dining and a night out. There is also a marina, the Downing Film independent movie theater, and art galleries at the waterfront.
The Broadway area offers interesting and diverse dining and entertainment options. There are excellent South American restaurants in the city. In the area near the historic Washington's Headquarters, you will find cafes and local shops that have opened up.
Newburgh is located approximately 60 miles North of New York City. The drive is approximately 1 hour 25 minutes without traffic.
The city of Newburgh students attend schools at the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. There are magnet schools and charter schools to choose from within the public school system.
