The town of Wallkill is located in Orange County. There is another Wallkill in Ulster County, around 15 miles North, which sometimes leads to confusion. It encompasses several hamlets, including Circleville, Mechanicstown, Crystal Run, Scotchtown, and the Highland Lakes State Park region.
Wallkill basically surrounds the City of Middletown. During the 1960s, the opening of new highways Route 17 and 84 through Wallkill has a great impact on the town. And the population grew.
The first Lloyd's Supercenter was built in Wallkill, and then came the Galleria at Crystal Run and Orange Plaza. The section of Route 211 where all these shopping centers were built was dubbed the "Miracle Mile", which was a prime example of the suburbanization of America and the birth of shopping centers. Unfortunately, it also started the decline of the American downtown and small businesses, especially affecting the life in Middletown.
Nowadays, Wallkill provides a suburban environment. It is still the major shopping district for most of Orange County where the mall, movie theater, and most big box stores can be found. The Orange regional medical center and the Crystal Run Health Care are also conveniently located in town.
In addition to the convenience in shopping, Wallkill offers plenty of outdoor opportunities given its country setting. There are fishing, hiking, and camping opportunities at the Highland Lakes State Park in town, and the nearby Stewart State Forest. According to the town website, there are 12 parks in the town with sports fields and picnic areas.
There is a public golf course, the Wallkill Golf Club. It was built in 1991 by the landscape architect Steve Esposite and has 18 holes.
Wallkill is approximately 65 miles North of New York City. Driving to New York City takes a little over 90 minutes. It takes around the same time to travel North to go to Albany. The major roads through Wallkill is I-84 and Route 17, which connects the town conveniently to the rest of New York and both sides of the Hudson River.
There is a Middletown Metro North station on the Port Jervis Line. It connects to the New Jersey transit service to the Secacus Station and Penn Station in New York City. The ride from Middletown to Secacus is approximately 90 minutes.
The Stewart International Airport is just East of the town, providing a convenient and hassle free place for air travel.
There are five school districts that service the Wallkill area: Middletown, Pine Bush, Valley Central, Goshen, and Minisink Valley.
