Every parent knows when that school bell rings for the last time that is means one thing: it’s time to send the kids off to summer camp. Whether your children attend day camp or summer camp, it is important that they have the right gear when they go.
Summer camp for most Westchester kids can last the whole summer or part of it, and will undoubtedly create memories that remain for a lifetime. No one wants those memories to be about the bug repellent Mom forgot to pack! When your child registers for camp, they typically send home a recommended list of items. It is best to pay attention to this list. They’ve created it, keeping both the activities and the environment in mind. So if they suggest you pack a sweatshirt and a rain jacket (just in case) then do so.
Another thing to keep in mind is your own child’s preferences when packing or preparing items for camp. That is, within reason. Some camps may limit treats campers bring or personal items with a concern they can get lost or broken during camp fun.
Especially if this is your child’s first year at sleepaway or day camp, choose an item that is a “touchstone” which reminds them of the comforts of home and happy friendships they were confident in creating. It could be a bracelet or a photo in a simple frame.
Here are some “must pack” items ideal for day camp:
- Sunscreen Bug repellent
- An extra towel for swimming
- A healthy snack (granola bar, trail mix) to share with friends
Here are some “got to have” items to pack for sleep away camp:
- Go to Voracious Reader or another local bookstore and find 2 or 3 terrific children’s books for your child to take with them to camp. Try letting your child pick one and then you pick the other. Choose books that take place in the same state or location where they will be going to sleep away camp will add to the fun.
- Shower caddy & shampoo, etc.
- Try a friendship bracelet kit (like this one), good for rainy day fun and breaking the ice with bunkmates.
What not to pack:
- Expensive electronics One-of-a-kind collectables or stuffed animals that cannot be replaced
- A diary (too tempting for bunkmates to read it!)
