The Goshen Central School District in Orange County serves students in the Village of Goshen, and parts of the towns of Goshen, Chester, Hamptonburgh, Wallkill, and Wawayanda. The Goshen Central School District was established in 1937. The buildings and athletic facilities are well-maintained and also serve as community centers.
There are four schools in the school district, including two elementary schools: one for Grades K-2, and one for Grades 3-5. Each school handles the district's entire student population at their grade level.
Approximately 2,900 students are enrolled in the school district. During the 2012-13 school year, 229 students graduated from 12th grade. The graduation rate was 90%, with 55% of those graduates planning on attending a four-year college.
Every student in grades K-8 in Goshen Schools receives general music instruction as well as music theory. Starting in fourth grade, instrumental lessons are offered, as well as early morning chorus for talented fourth and fifth graders. PTO sponsored clubs, such as creative writing, science, math, aerobics and cooking are extremely popular and well attended.
Students in grades 3-12 can participate in the Odyssey of the Mind program. Students in grades 6-12 may participate in Science Olympiad.
The Middle School offers the extracurricular clubs such as the school newspaper, quiz bowl, chess, and a number of athletic programs. Band and chorus are also popular school activities.
In the high school, Latin and advanced placement courses such as biology, English, French, Spanish, calculus and U. S. history are taught. Students in grades 9-12 can join a variety of clubs, such as National Honor Society, Mock Trial, Student Senate and the school newspaper, to name only a few.
All the schools in the Goshen School District are almost within sight of each other, in the Northeast corner of the Village of Goshen. The schools are within walking distance from the homes and shops in the village.
The pedestrian friendly village center in Goshen is the seat of Orange County, and offers lively entertainment, eclectic restaurants, art galleries, coffee shops and trendy retail venues. Walking through the village feels like a different era, with historic buildings and churches dating back to the 1800s.
Outside the village, you will see lush rolling hills and farmlands. The Warwick Valley landscape is stunning in all seasons. There is plenty to enjoy in Goshen, including visiting the farms and wineries in the area, which host many events from spring to fall. To enjoy winter sports, you can go downhill skiing at Mount Peter, or cross country skiing at the many parks.
Nature lovers can explore, fish and hike at one of Orange County’s many state parks like Harriman State Park and Schunnemunk Mountain State Park. Stewart State Forest is also just a short drive away.
Goshen is located approximately 60 miles away from New York City. Driving to New York City takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Most of the driving in town passes through NY-17, which connects to I-84 and I-87.
Shopping at the Woodbury Commons Premium Outlets, or shopping at Middletown around the Galleria, are both around a 20 minute drive away. Stewart International Airport is less than 30 minutes drive away.
