Hempstead is one of three towns in Nassau County, Long Island, along with North Hempstead and Oyster Bay. The Town of Hempstead is located in the Southwestern portion of Nassau County. There are 22 incorporated villages within the Town of Hempstead, and the village of Hempstead is located within the town. The Southern border of the town is the Altantic Ocean, where you can enjoy sandy beaches and long broadwalks.
The town of Hempstead is conveniently located just next to Queens. Residents can easily commute to New York City via Long Island Rail Road, by bus, and the Southern State Parkway passes East to West through the town.
The Town of Hempstead consists of 191.3 square miles, 71.4 square miles of which is water. According to the 2010 census, the population of Hempstead is 759,757, which is by far the largest of any New York towns. If the town were to be incorporated as a city, it would be the second largest in the state behind New York City and ahead of Buffalo. It is also three times the size of Buffalo.
The estimated median household income of the town is $102,002, according to the 2017 census data. The largest employer is the town government.
Shopping is very convenient in Hempstead. Roosevelt Field is a large shopping center in Garden City. To enjoy nature, Hempstead Lake State Park is a 737-acre state park located in West Hempstead with a carousel, 20 tennis courts, playground, picnic tables with pavilions, walking and riding trails, and a fishing lake. There are and is one of three state parks within the Town of Hempstead. Valley Stream State Park and Jones Beach State Park are also all located within the Town of Hempstead. Jones Beach is considered the most popular beach on the East coast of the United States.
Hofstra University, New York University and Nassau Community College all have campuses in the Town of Hempstead.
