Bay Shore is a waterfront hamlet, which includes parts of Brightwaters, a village with many beautiful stately homes, along the Western part of the Bay Shore. The Sunrise Highway dissects the town; the homes in Southern part is along the Great South Bay and many are located along the water, and the Northern part is inland, where you are able to find homes in a larger range of price points.
Bay Shore is a diverse town, and after a period of decay, the downtown area of Bay Shore has reinvented itself and is once again a vibrant business district. There are now cools shops and lots of great restaurants, a popular YMCA with a theater on Main Street, where people come from nearby towns to enjoy the upscale amenities. The downtown area now hosts many community festivals, including an annual arts festival, St. Patrick's Day parades, concerts, farmers markets, and more.
For more shopping, there are large shopping centers at the South Shore Mall, the Gardiner Manor Shopping Center with a Target and big box stores, and the Tanger Outlets in Deer Park.
Mainly, water lovers will enjoy the Bay Shore lifestyle. There are waterfront homes with direct water access to the shore and canals, many of which are distinctive Victorians and Tudors.
The Bay Shore Manor Park on the Great South Bay has playgrounds and a water park for kids. There are both public and private marinas with boat slips and ramps. To reach the ocean beaches, you can also drive quickly to Robert Moses Start Park via the Robert Moses Causeway.
There is a train station in Bay Shore on the Montauk branch, and the train ride is one hour to midtown Manhattan for direct trains, and longer if a transfer is required. To drive, Bay Shore is approximately 43 miles from the city via the Southern State Parkway, or a bit over one hour. Most of the traffic to other towns on Long Island are through the Southern State Parkway and Sunrise Highway. Bay Shore also has a terminal for ferries to Fire Island.
