Dobbs Ferry is located along the Hudson River, and is one of the river towns. Each of the river towns has its own characteristics. Hastings to the South and Irvington to the North of the village are usually known as more upscale. Dobbs Ferry used to have more of a working class vibe, and nowadays is still more diverse than its neighbors, which many of the residents find more interesting and desirable.
Dobbs Ferry has a quaint downtown area with beautiful buildings from the 1800s. In addition, the village has a lot of well maintained parks. The largest is the Juhring Park, a 76-acre preserve with trails for biking and jogging. The Waterfront Park has great views, and more amenities are being added. The Gould Park has a playground and a public swimming pool.
The train ride from Dobbs Ferry Metro North station to Grand Central Station takes about 35-45 minutes. For those driving to midtown Manhattan, the ride is 20 miles and can be done in 35 minute. Dobbs Ferry is around 12 miles West of White Plains, and just 8 miles South of Tarrytown.

Students in Dobbs Ferry mainly attend schools in the Dobbs Ferry Union Free School District. The school was the first in Westchester to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) program to high school students, which is recognized internationally (compared to AP programs).
There is one private school, the Masters School, in Dobbs Ferry. It offers day school and boarding for students. The village is also home to Mercy College.
