Ossining is a town in Northern Westchester. It includes the Village of Ossining and portion of the Village of Briarcliff Manor.
The town of Ossining was originally called Sing Sing, which is also the name of the infamous maximum-security prison that, which it housed. In 1901, local officials changed the town name to Ossining to put some distance between itself and the notorious prison.
Partly due to the bad reputation of the prison, and the general trend of the decline of small towns in the mid 1900s, Ossining went through a slow descent. That is until the recent resurgence, where new shops and restaurants are opening in the downtown shopping area.
There are several qualities attracting new residents to Ossining now. It is more racially diverse than many of the Northern Westchester towns, making it a far more culturally interesting place to live. Lastly, you will find waterfront views and lots of hiking and nature activities in the surrounding areas.
There are 6 town parks in Ossining. The Louis Engel Waterfront Park, next to the Metro North train station, offers a playground, picnic tables and riverfront activities like boating and fishing. In total, the town maintains more than 130 acres of parkland, that provides sports fields, playgrounds, fishing and hiking facilities.
The Ossining Public Library went through an ambitious building plan with a new 48,000 square foot building. The new library opened in 2007, and added many new services including a 250-seat theater, an art gallery, and a cafe. T
Ossining is approximately 30 miles North of New York City. The Metro North Station is walkable from downtown along the waterfront. The train ride from Ossining to New York City takes about 42 minutes. Driving wise, Ossining is easily accessible to Routes 9 and 9A, the NY State Thruway, and the Bronx River parkway.
Students in Ossining go to schools at the Ossining Union Free School District. A small portion go to the Briarcliff Manor School District.
