Oyster Bay is one of three towns in Nassau County, Long Island, along with Hempstead and North Hempstead. The Town of Oyster Bay is made up of 18 villages and 18 hamlets, with one of the hamlets also named Oyster Bay. Residents can easily commute to New York City from Oyster Bay via Long Island Rail Road, by bus, and 495 and Southern Parkway pass East to West through the town.
Oyster Bay extends from the North at Long Island Sound to the South Shore. As with most of Long Island, the North shore is hilly, the South shore has sandy beaches, and in between is a plain. Just to the Eat of Oyster Bay is Suffolk County. According to the 2010 census, the population of Oyster Bay is 293,214. The estimated median household income of the town is $120,826 according to the 2017 census data.
As to why Oyster Bay is named as such, Long Island has long been known for its local fishing industry, which harvests oysters from local waters and local hatcheries. There is an annual Oyster Festival at Oyster Bay in October that draws more than 200,000 people each year.
Sagamore Hill, a national historic site and home of former president Theodore Roosevelt, is located in the village of Cove Neck along the North Shore. Billy Joel is another famous resident of Oyster Bay.
There are many top notch public schools in Oyster Bay. Along with its convenient location being close to Manhattan, plenty of things to do including local parks and beaches, lots of amenities including shopping conveniences, many people happily choose Oyster Bay to be their home.
