Kent is a town located in Putnam County New York, just South of East Fishkill in Dutchess County. Lake Carmel is in Kent, the Carmel Central School District covers most of Kent, and some Kent residents have Carmel mailing addresses, which leads to much confusion about where Carmel (to the South of Kent) and Kent are. Kent has even more lakes and reservoirs than Carmel to its South, and has even more open space.
Kent was a rural farming region until the late 19th century, when all the reservoirs started building, supplying water to New York City. By the 1920s, most of the farms were drowned, and Kent slowly became a summer vacation spot. Nowadays, with access to 84 and the Taconic State Parkway, most of the residents are year round. However, most commute to work in New York City or nearby Dutchess or Westchester County.
Two state parks, Wonder Lake State Park and the Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Parks offer lots of hiking, along with a portion of the Appalachian Trail. You can hike at the Ninham Mountain State Forest, where the Mount Ninham fire tower is the tallest in New York. There are many other lakes in the town, including Lake Carmel, Sagamore lake, Kentwood Lake, Lake Tibet, China Lake (with a beach), Seven Hills Lake, and Palmer Lake.
Another place of interest is Chuang Yen Monastery, which houses the largest indoor Buddah Temple in the Western hemisphere.
There are around 5,287 housing properties in the Town of Kent. Around 88.5% of the housing are detached single family homes, and 4.3% are attached single family homes.
Approximately 86.9% of the homes are owner-occupied, and 13.1% are being rented.
In 2014, there were 128 single family homes sold in Kent, according to the Hudson Gateway MLS. The median sales price was $221,250 and the average days on market was 195 days.
