Mount Vernon is usually divided into three parts: the downtown area in the middle, the North size, and the South side. The downtown area has a shopping district, a transit hub, and home to the city government buildings. The South side has more similarities to city neighborhoods in the Bronx and Queens, and has convenient shopping centers with stores like Target. The North side, or the Fleetwood area, is similar to suburban Westchester, with more single family homes. You will also find some apartment buildings and co-ops in Fleetwood.
Although parts of Mount Vernon may feel congested like the city, there are several parks offering some outdoor fun: the Wilson's Woods Park that has a pond for fishing, a pool with water slides and wave pool, picnic areas and hiking trails. You can also go biking along the Bronx River Parkway, or hike at Hunt's Woods in the Northern part of the city.
Mount Vernon Commute
Located just North of the Bronx border, it is very convenient to commute to New York City from Mount Vernon. There are several Metro North stations in or close to Mount Vernon, including: Mount Vernon West and Fleetwood on the Harlem Line, and Mount Vernon East station on the New Haven Line. The ride can take as little as 24 minutes.
There are also buses that provide routes from Mount Vernon to New York City, and the Bee Line Bus System provides routes within Westchester. The New York City bus and subway system also have stops very close to Mount Vernon.
Driving to Grand Central Station is approximately 17 miles and takes around half an hour. White Plains is around 10 miles North of Mount Vernon.
Mount Vernon Schools
Mount Vernon students attend school at the Mount Vernon School District. Mount Vernon schools do not have high test scores like some of the surrounding school districts, which leads to lower real estate prices in Mount Vernon compared to nearby Eastchester and Bronxville. Some of the residents choose to send their kids to private or parochial schools.
