Thornwood is a hamlet inside the town of Mount Pleasant, approximately 40 minutes North of New York City. Thornwood is located in Central Westchester County, with White Plains 10 minutes away.
Thornwood once had a large and flourishing marble quarry, at the intersection of Route 141 and Kensico Road. The quarry pit was filled up in the mid 1980s. The location is now the Town Center Shopping Center.
The town of Mount Pleasant, which Thornwood is part of, offers many recreational programs for its residents. There are many parks and outdoor spaces within a short drive. Within Thornwood, the Caroll Park provides sports fields and a pond for fishing. In the winter, you can also ice skate at the park.
Thornwood Commute
Thornwood is approximately 30 miles from Midtown Manhattan.
The train station in Thornwood has not been used since the mid 80s. Residents can drive to the Pleasantville and Hawthorne Metro North train stations, which is then a 40 minute train ride away from Grand Central Station.
As for driving, the town is close to the Taconic and Saw Mill Parkways which connects the town to other parts of the county, and New York State.
Thornwood Schools
Most of the students in Thornwood go to the Mount Pleasant Schools. A portion go to the Byram Hills School District.
