The City of Yonkers is the fourth most populated city in New York State (behind New York City, Buffalo, and Rochester), and the most populated in Westchester County. It borders the Bronx to the South, Bronxville and Tuckahoe to the East, the the Hudson River to the West.
You will find Yonkers to be very diverse. Being a city, you will find lots of businesses and retail in Yonkers. Getty Square is where the city government is located. Along the Hudson River, you will find great river views with beautiful Victorian homes. In the Northern part of Yonkers, bordering Bronxville, you will find large suburban estates in Lawrence Park and Cedar Knolls.
You will also find beautiful parks like Untermyer Park and Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers. The Yonkers recreation department operates 70 parks and playgrounds, 74 street malls, 57 ball fields, 24 tennis courts, fourteen senior citizen centers, a skating rink, a rifle and pistol range, two greenhouses, an indoor pool, four community centers as well as other facilities.
Yonkers is located just North of the Bronx and has lots of public transportation options. It is also a walkable town, and some of the residents get by without a car. There are Metro North stations in or close to Yonkers on both the Hudson and the Harlem Line. The stations include: Ludlow, Yonkers, Glenwood, and Greystone on the Hudson Line on the Western part of town, and Wakefield, Mount Vernon West, Fleetwood, Bronxville, Tuckahoe, and Crestwood on the Eastern part of the town.
The Bee-Line Bus system provides bus service from Yonkers to other parts of Westchester. The MTA has some bus routes to Manhattan.
Driving from the Yonkers Metro North Station to Grand Central Terminal in NYC is 15 miles and takes around 35 minutes without traffic. The distance to White Plains is also 15 miles, and the drive is is around 25 minutes.
Yonkers has its own Yonkers City School District. There are magnet schools within the district. Many of the residents also choose to send their kids to private or parochial schools.
