Mahopac is a hamlet located in the town of Carmel in Putnam County. Mahopac is located just North of Westchester County, and is full of lakes and reservoirs and woods. Actually a large part of Mahopac and Carmel are located on New York City watershed land, and when you are driving in town, it is hard to be without a lake view for more than 10 minutes. Mahopac is perfect for anyone looking for a beautiful and semi-rural setting while being within 60 miles from New York City.
Mahopac is in the Southern part of the town and is more populated than the rest of the town. The heart of Mahopac is Lake Mahopac, one of the many lakes in Mahopac and is the only one that allows motor boats and jet skis. Most of the shops and restaurants, generally in small strip malls, are along Route 6 and 6N. That includes the large Mahopac Library, which actually has a very nice view of Lake Mahopac. It is not surprising that there are many homes, some mansions, along the shores of lake.

Mahopac was a popular summer vacation destination for New Yorkers in the early 1900s. After the opening of the Taconic State Parkway and I-84 and I-684, newer homes were built in the 1960s and 1970s. Commuting to Mahopac is through I-84 and the Taconic State Parkway. Travelling to New York City via Taconic State Parkway is between 50-60 miles from the town, and takes around an hour and fifteen minutes.
There are no Metro North stations in town. The closest station would be Croton Falls on the Harlem Line, which is then around 1 hr and 20 minutes from Grand Central Station.

There are several shopping centers in Mahopac. Most of them are along Route 6 and Route 6N. Several restaurants and shops are on Route 6 around Lake Mahopac. There are also some shopping centers on the border of Westchester County, at the Putnam Square Shopping Center and the Somers Commons Shopping Center, where you will find grocery stores, a Home Goods, and gym.
There is a movie theater in Carmel. You will also find movie theaters at Jefferson Valley Mall in Westchester, and Danbury CT, 15 minutes away. Danbury is only 10 miles away, which offers plenty of stores and restaurants, and chain stores like Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and Walmart.
Mahopac offers an abundances of open space, pristine lakes and woods, and is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. You will find plenty of farmlands, woods, and park in this semi-rural area.
The Putnam Trailway is a scenic paved bike/pedestrian path where you can travel on foot or on bike from Brewster to Carmel, which connects to Westchester (thru the North County Trailway) and North to Dutchess County. There are many parks nearby, including the Sycamore Park in Carmel with sports fields, beach area, and a dog park. The Putnam County Memorial Veteran Park is a 200-acre park with a lake for swimming and ice skating, and hiking trails.
Golf lovers can play at the public Putnam Golf Club, or the private Mahopac Golf Club. Horseback riding is also a popular sport. Skiing is available at the Thunder Ridge ski resort just North of the town, in Patterson.
